APPEARANCE OF SWASTIKA REPRESENTS ATTACK ON ENTIRE COMMUNITY

  • March 14, 2014

Philadelphia, PA, March 14, 2014… The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned a yellow swastika painted on the sidewalk near the Philadelphia Holocaust Memorial.

The League applauded the Philadelphia Police Department for their quick and responsive actions in documenting and investigating the incident as a bias-motivated crime.  The swastika has since been removed by the City of Philadelphia.

Nancy K. Baron-Baer, Interim Regional Director for ADL Philadelphia, issued the following statement:

“The appearance of a swastika represents an attack on the entire community. The swastika is a universal symbol of hate, meant to instill fear and intimidation. By targeting the Philadelphia Holocaust Memorial, the perpetrators in this case intended to send a message to the entire community.

We urge members of the community to speak out and declare in one voice that this act of hate is unacceptable. Additionally, we encourage community members to report incidents of anti-Semitism to the Anti-Defamation League.

We applaud the immediate response of the Philadelphia Police Department and are hopeful that those responsible will be identified and prosecuted.”
