ADL’s Walk Against Hate

The Anti-Defamation League’s Walk Against Hate is a special event for me. It was the first event I participated in when I moved to Philadelphia. I love what the ADL stands for… and truly believe in the work they do.

Last year I attended an event the ADL put on for the students at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School. For the students the major issue with “hate” they face is bullying and they’ve formed a group of students to combat the issue in their school. A Holocaust survivor shared her story and the message she shared has stuck with me. In a nutshell: It’s about being human. Her fight was one to live and every day she lived, she won. More than that, it’s about recognizing that others who are different than us are also human. We all have that in common.

I think that is something we all need to remember. No matter how uncomfortable we feel or how different we think we are… we are all human and in that we are the same. So politics aside… Ultimately we all want the same thing: to live and enjoy life. It’s really that simple.
