As the Nation Awaits a Grand Jury Decision in Ferguson, It’s Time to Confront Our History (November 18, 2014)

ADL’s role as the leading non-governmental trainer of law enforcement in the country on hate and extremism uniquely positions us to bridge the divide between police and civil rights groups.  We have now trained close to 90,000 members of law enforcement through our Law Enforcement and Society (LEAS) program that we do in conjunction with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

ADL’s Education Division has posted a Current Events Classroom with lesson plans for high school students about the death of Michael Brown and the aftermath in Ferguson.

Following his press conference in the wake of the Michael Brown shooting, ADL sent a letter to President Obama welcoming his call to Americans to “seek out our shared humanity.”  In the letter we applauded “the rigorous engagement of Attorney General Holder and the Department of Justice to ensure that justice, civil rights and public safety are served.”

ADL has been in touch with members of the Department of Justice in both Washington, D.C. and St. Louis and we are pleased that the Attorney General went to Ferguson and is devoting the resources of his office to help with the investigation and address the issues.   We hope there will be hearings and briefings in Congress on this issue.

ADL has produced a number of curriculum resources to help teachers address these issues:

What Is Happening In Ferguson, MO? (Current Events Classroom lesson, grades 9-12, PDF)

Privilege, Discrimination and Racial Disparities in the Criminal Justice System (Current Events Classroom lesson, grades 9-12, PDF)
