Today, ADL issued a statement in response to the recent incident in which Delaware State Representative Gerald Brady (D-Wilmington) sent an email to a private citizen from his official email address that included offensive anti-Asian and misogynist language.
“We firmly denounce the racist and sexist comments recently made by Delaware State Representative Gerald Brady,” said Shira J. Goodman, Regional Director. “Representative Brady’s language is profoundly offensive towards women, the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and all people of conscience in his district and beyond. This rhetoric is inexcusable from any elected official at any time, but it is especially deplorable in the context of surging anti-AAPI hate crimes that we have tracked in recent months.
“While he apologized for his remarks and pledged not to run for reelection when his term expires next year, additional actions must be taken to immediately hold Representative Brady to account for his actions. This incident has shattered the trust of his constituents. We urge the Delaware General Assembly to demonstrate that it does not condone hate by censuring Representative Brady and stripping him of his leadership positions as well as his seat on the Judiciary and Public Safety and Homeland Security Committees.
“We stand with the AAPI community and clearly say that Delaware must not tolerate hate in any form, at any time, from anyone.”
