Philadelphia, PA, January 3, 2017 … The Anti-Defamation League (“ADL”) today applauded the Philadelphia Mummers Association for organizing a more inclusive and respectful Mummers Parade. The January 1, 2017 parade included more performing groups representing diverse Philadelphians, and took steps to avoid the kind of offensive and stereotypical portrayals that marred the event in years past. These encouraging developments were the result of collaboration between the Philadelphia Mummers Association and the City of Philadelphia, which included sensitivity training, stronger policies against bias, and outreach to diverse communities.
“We commend the Philadelphia Mummers Association for a more inclusive and respectful 2017 Mummers Parade,” said Nancy Baron-Baer, ADL Regional Director. “The parade is a storied Philadelphia institution, which unfortunately has been tarnished in the past by a lack of diversity and by offensive portrayals based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or other traits. The 2017 Mummers Parade was an important step in the right direction, and helped kick off the year on a positive note.”
“We are grateful to Mayor Kenney and the City of Philadelphia for their work in guiding and supporting the Mummers in their efforts. We hope this partnership continues in the future, to ensure that the parade further reflects, and respects, the city’s proud diversity.”
“May the 2017 Mummers Parade portend a year of unity and positivity for Philadelphia.”
