ADL HAILS NEW JERSEY STATE SENATE RESOLUTION CONDEMNING ANTI-SEMITISM

  • January 30, 2015

Florham Park, NJ, January 29, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) strongly commended the introduction in the New Jersey State Senate of a resolution condemning the global surge in anti-Semitism, which was unanimously approved today by the Senate committee.

ADL submitted testimony to the State Senate in Trenton, underscoring the significant timing of this legislative initiative, particularly in the wake of the terror attacks in Paris and sobering figures on global anti-Semitism. New Jersey Senate Concurrent Resolution 154 condemns all forms of anti-Semitism and rejects attempts to justify anti-Jewish hatred or violent attacks as acceptable expressions of disapproval over political events in the Middle East or elsewhere.

“The hearing clearly and directly expresses the commitment of the people of the State of New Jersey to speak out against the recent disturbing uptick in anti-Semitism around the world,” said Nancy Baron-Baer, ADL Southern New Jersey Regional Director. “Such a resolution sends an important message on an issue which is not just part of our history, but rather a current event. We are fully confident that the Senate will adopt what came out of the committee.”

ADL also pointed to the upsurge in violence against Jews around the world during and related to Israel’s military operation to stop Hamas rockets and tunnels in the Gaza Strip.

“In just the few short weeks since the resolution was introduced, the world has once again witnessed the murder of Jews, this time in a Paris kosher market, simply because they were Jews,” said Joshua Cohen, ADL North and Central New Jersey Regional Director. “We also saw many disturbing incidents which targeted Jews in the wake of Israel’s attempt to fight Hamas terror this past summer.

Mr. Cohen added, “This resolution not only sends a resounding message across the state, but also serves as a clarion call in standing up for the safety and security of Jews across the globe, and we express our deep appreciation to Senators Weinberg, Kean, and Sweeney and all of the co-sponsors who made this come to fruition.”

A recent ADL poll in 100 countries found that more than one-in-four- adults, 26 percent of those surveyed, are deeply infected with anti-Semitic attitudes.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
