For the fourth straight year, Pennsylvania and Delaware have experienced a decline in the number of reported anti-Semitic incidents, according to the Anti-Defamation League’s annual audit of such cases.
The audit, officially released on July 22 and covering 2012, detailed 38 anti-Semitic incidents across the two states, one fewer than last year. Nationally, there were 927 incidents reported in 2012, compared to 1,080 incidents in 2011, representing a 14 percent decline.
Of the 38 reported incidents in Pennsylvania and Delaware, the audit identified 22 incidents of harassment and 16 incidents of vandalism.
In one case of harassment reported in the Philadelphia area, a woman answering her son’s phone was told to “tell your stupid kike” son to stay away “or we will kill him.” In another case of harassment, a victim’s house was spray-painted with the words “Get the hell out Jew or die.”
In releasing the audit, the ADL typically does not disclose detailed information about the incidents.
“While we were spared a major tragedy this year, this does minimize the incidents that were reported to our office,” said Barry Morrison, ADL’s regional director, who is planning to retire at the end of the year. “Anti-Semitism is vile, rankles the conscience and has no place in civil society. We encourage the community to remain vigilant and bring incidents of anti-Semitism to our attention when they occur.”
Once again, New York, the state with the largest Jewish population, experienced the greatest number of anti-Semitic incidents: 248, up from 195 in 2011. New Jersey had 173 reported incidents, up from 144 in 2011. There were 88 incidents reported in Florida, down from 111 in 2011.
